Beginners Simple Poppy Study

Colors: Yellow Red, Pompadour, Blood Red, Mixing Yellow, Moss Green. Black, Pansy Purple, Chartreuse, Black Green
Trace on a pattern or sketch on a pattern.
Optional: Spray with unscented hair spray. This keeps your lines from disappearing when painting over them. Spray 12 inches away from your piece, and spray lightly just a couple times.

First Fire:
Petals: Yellow Red - Paint in all the flower petals with a full load of color on your brush
Centers: Leave centers unpainted yet, or wipe them out with your wipe out tool or a clean brush.
Petals: With a wipe out tool, wipe out a lines between each of the petals.

Wiping out Petals: Some of the Poppy petals are wiped out from the top down, and some of them are wiped out from the bottom up. Hold your piece so you will be pulling your brush strokes in towards yourself. Put a little pressure on your brush while pulling, and lifting your brush (slowly) as you pull towards the center of the petal. These wipe outs will be the highlighted areas on the petals. Lifting your brush will leave your shading between the petals. Soften your strokes.
Centers: Mixing Yellow painted in the center. On one side of the center, paint in some Moss Green color right on top of the yellow painted area. Wipe out a small highlight spot in the center of the yellow with your wipe out tool
Around the Centers: Fully load your #4 brush with some Pansy Purple and Black, and dab little filter like strokes around the yellow centers. Continue to reload your brush with paint as needed till paint surrounds the yellow centers. Now, Pull out some of the dark lines with the corner of your brush from the filtered strokes. Paint some black dots on the end of the lines that you pulled out.
Holes: Wipe out some small uneven holes with your wipe out tool wiping holes out of the black ring around the center.
Leaves: Paint in a wash of Chartreuse, and add some black green on your brush and paint in the shaded area of the leaves.
Fire 018
Second Fire
Centers: Mixing Yellow painted in the centers again. Add some Black Green on top of the Moss Green area already painted in on your first fire. Wipe out the highlight in the yellow area again.
Petals: Side load your brush with Pompadour. This color is the next darker value painted on your second fire. Place the Pompadour next to the highlighted areas that you wiped out on your first fire. Soften your strokes. Wipe out the highlighted areas again, with a clean brush.
Around the Centers: Mix Pansy Purple and Black together again with a fully loaded #4 brush and lay some more filtered strokes around the yellow centers. Pull out some black lines, and place some black dots on the end of the pulled out lines. Add a few more small black dots where there are no black lines.
Holes: Wipe out some small uneven holes again with your wipe out tool. Wipe out of the purple and black filtered strokes around the center.
Leaves: Moss Green and Black Green mixed on your brush together. Now add to your shaded areas of the leaves, and wipe out your highlight areas.
Fire 018
Third Fire:
Centers: Deepen with same colors as second fire
Petals: Side load your brush with Pompadour plus Blood Red and deepen your shadow area on the petals. You can also add black to this mixture for depth if needed. See third picture where the one flower is underneath the other one. You can deepen this area with Blood Red and a (little) Black mixed well on your brush.
Around the Centers: You can add Black, only if you want more depth of color. Wipe the holes out of the black area again. Add more black dots only if needed.
Leaves: Deepen with same colors as in second fire.
