  • Tile . Tile size is about 5 3/4" and it comes with a wood frame. ( from Maryland China http://www.marylandchina.com )

First Fire:
Draw or trace the eagle onto the tile. Use Rich Brown to paint in the eye, that's the pupil, iris and the dark flesh area between the iris & the eyelid. Be sure to place the outer line of the eyelid. This shows the thickness of the eyelid. There are different values of dark color in the dark fleshy area of the eye.

Soften the edges of the eye by the pupil and iris. The iris has some dark colors gently placed in it. These are soft colors. Wipe out a highlight on the upper left of the pupil & also in the iris on the lower right. Be sure not to loose the lights, soften them. There is a shadow from the upper eyelid onto the eyeball.

Place the darks in the nostril of the beak. Inside the upper left area of the nostril is the darkest area. There is a shadow here. The light is coming from the upper left. The inside right is a little lighter because the light is hitting it.

Gently lay on flat color on the beak. When applying the paint, stroke in a curve. This is because the beak is in a curve. Do remember to make the lower area in shadow. Wipe out the lighter areas of the beak. This helps to show roundness. Soften the outside edges of the beak and the end of the beak.

The nostril has a thicker area around it. Do wipe out a light on this area. There is a light shadow around this thickness of the nostril and it extends over the top of the beak.

Place darks in the mouth taking care to look at the lighter area of the tongue & the darker areas inside of the mouth or beak. There is a thick ridge around the outside of the opening of the beak. This ridge extends up towards the top of the beak. Use your wipe out tool to bring out the highlights. Be sure to darken the shadow area around this thick area.

Dark feathers are blocked in below the light feathers. This is just a short flat stroke.

The lighter feathers on the head & neck are placed in with short flat strokes. Clean your brush and then wipe out the feathers. Use your wipe out tool in the lightest areas. Soften the edges of the feathers around the head and neck.

There is a dark shadow around the lower part of the eye & between the eye & the beak. Gently use your wipe out tool or your small stipple brush to give this area texture. I also used my fingernail with a paper towel wrapped tightly and using my fingernail I touched the paint repeatedly to lift out the lights.

Darken the area on the left side of the eye. Loose the edge of the left side of the eye where the feathers are.

There is a shadow at the top part of the beak. It points towards the top of the head.

There is a shadow underneath the beak. Wipe out the feathers in this area also.

Lightly lay color in for the mountains in the background. I left strokes so there is texture on the mountains. Wipe out some highlights.

Lightly lay in the clouds around the eagle. Wrap a paper towel around your finger tightly, then dab your finger on the paint to lift out the color for the clouds. Make interesting shapes using your fingernail. Fire .017

Second Fire:
Reinforce all darks and wipe out the highlights. Paint in the three birds in the sky very lightly and sign your name. Fire .017

Use white glue to glue the tile into the frame.
